Big Dance Theater
 |
Founded in 1991, Big Dance Theater breaks down proscribed genres to saturate dance with theater and theater with dance. Under the Co-Artistic Direction of Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, BDT has created 14 original works, ranging from pure dance pieces to dance/theater adaptations of plays, stories and novellas. BDT is known for its adventurous use of dance, music, text and song to expand and refract literary texts, weaving seemingly disparate sources and forms into a seamless theatrical whole.

The Other Here Premiering at the Japan Society in New York City
February 2007
Colliding Eastern and Western elements to offer an engaging meditation on the quest for purpose in a modern world rife with perplexity. Layered with the pleasures of Big Dance Theater's expert use of dance, music, and visual design, including re-inventions of ancient Okinawan dance, as well as singing and dancing to the Okinawan pop music of Shoukichi Kina, The Other Here moves us through a surprising day inspired by the real-life Million Dollar Round Table, the exuberant global gathering of top life insurance salespeople.
As the salesmen sing, dance, drink tea, make speeches and take lunch around a large table/dance-floor/stage, they embody for us the slipperiness of contemporary life, where death and disaster mean everything and nothing, sincerity and falsity are hopelessly intertwined, and cultures exist in global free-fall.
“The most refreshing voice among a new generation of choreographers. Parson’s blend of dance and theater is accessible to any audience member regardless of age, race, gender or previous knowledge of dance.”
- Call Toronto
“Some of the most interesting and intelligent performers in New York.”
- The Village Voice
