The Classical Theatre of Harlem
 |
The Classical Theatre of Harlem re-energizes classic works with its highly visual and intensely physical renderings. In addition The CTH is committed to staging rarely performed but remarkably powerful modern classic works by African-American playwrights. The Company's touring season includes two productions that exemplify the dynamic energy of this Obie Award-winning company, the exuberant community in which it is based, and its dedication to new, young, and culturally diverse audiences.
"The Classical Theater of Harlem is a troupe that makes a habit of locating the most challenging works in the canon and knocking them off as if with a slingshot."

Trojan Women
A radical adaptation of Euripides' play using the first person testimony
of survivors of the atrocities in Sierra Leone and Liberia as told
to the United Nations Human Rights Watch, this new production achieves
a contemporary feel both frightening and riveting. An original musical
score with the choral odes being sung, danced, and chanted, provides
ritualistic counterpoint to the story, echoing the ancient Greek theatrical
structure. CTH's Trojan Women posits that the intolerable human
disaster that is always happening "somewhere else" has finally come
full circle, and is now happening "here."
“...dynamic and harrowing production...”
