LOS ANGELES TIMES,
Friday, August 2, 2002
"At 79, French pantomime paragon Marcel Marceau
still has the power to redefine theater in his own image. In an
age of relentless amplification, he gives us the wonder of silence.
In an age of numbing literalism, he conjures up the magic of metaphor.
In an age when every facet of meaning is desperately heightened
and oversold, he dares to make demands on an audience. Watch him
closely at the Geffen Playhouse--where he opened a 19-day engagement
on Wednesday--or you might miss something sublime...These days,
longevity and publicity alone can make you something of a legend
in the entertainment world. Longevity and talent can make you a
one-and-only attraction. Add genius and you have Marcel Marceau,
still speaking one of the oldest theatrical languages with undimmed
artistry, immediacy and charm."..... to read the complete

Taking
Their Bows
BY LEIGHTON KERNER
"Get thee fast to the Miller Theater
and the Gogmagogs' show, Gobbledygook (a title that insults
the group's range and talent). The Gogs, as they're best known
at home in London, got together in 1995; violinist Nell Catchpoll
and director Lucy Bailey wanted to develop stage skills to go
along with their musical techniques. Gobbledygook, the newest
of their several shows, uses words for the first time. The pieces'
authors are Caryl Churchill, Rupert Sheldrake, Patrick Barlow,
and Neil Innes; the composers-who evoke pop, jazz, Bartók, and
Shostakovich-are Roddy Skeaping, Orlando Gough, Django Bates,
and Innes."

Juggling
Propelled to Magical Heights
BY SYLVIANE GOLD
MICHAEL MOSCHEN. "Moschen...can persuade
you that the rolling of a ball is an utterly mysterious, metaphysical
event. He can turn an ordinary hoop into a shimmering three-dimensional
bubble and a silver baton into a snaking series of arcs. They
call him a juggler, but that's a little like calling Michelangelo
a stonecutter or Mozart a piano player. Moschen juggles and
the world becomes a more beautiful and profound place."

In
my later years as director of New York's City Center Theater
in the late 1980's, early 1990's, as we enjoyed the Martha Graham
Dance Company in annual performance during the last years of
Miss Graham's life, I witnessed what I felt then and continue
to feel was a great tragedy. The Company was in superb form.
Miss Graham was still actively supervising the dancers and the
preparation, and one sensed a mature artistry expressed by the
very finest dancers, with an underlying energy catalyzed by
a realization of Miss Graham's mortality. Get
