Featuring a band, brass choir,
a dancer and performers, God's Trombones is a musical
extravaganza based on the 1927 collection of poems that reconfigures
inspirational sermons by "Negro" preachers. By capturing these
sermons in free verse form, Johnson strove to document and preserve
a unique African-American cultural tradition in the face of
increased assimilation into a more mainstream American way of
life.
